The 15 year old All Stars opened up with an impressive win over Lower Cape by an 11 – 1 margin. Billy Sullivan pitched 6 strong innings, scattering 7 hits and striking out 5. Pat Muldoon closed the game in the 7th inning by striking out all 3 Lower Cape batters. The team played errorless ball and stole 6 bases in the contest. The Gateway All Stars were led offensively by Aidan McBride, who went 3 for 3, scoring once and knocking in 2. Anthony Angelo, who anchored the defensive with 7 put outs at short, went 2 for 3, scoring twice with 1 RBI. Ollie Hiller and Mike Mendes each collected 2 hits and scored. Mikey Sullivan reached base 4 of 5 times and scored twice. Mark Storrs, knocked in 2 runs with a clutch single to right and later scored on a Brian Ganshirt single to left. Aidan McBride, Hunter Black and Anthony Angelo each collected extra base hits in the game. The 15’s now await the winner of the Plymouth/Falmouth game.

Game #3. The 15 year old Gateway all star team rebounded nicely from a tough loss to perennial rival Plymouth, to defeat the Mashpee All Stars 9-4.  Mark Storrs, who relieved starter Kurtis Garcia in the 3rd, picked up the win. Storrs kept the Mashpee batters at bay with a mix of fastballs and off speed pitches for 4 innings. Storrs allowed only 1 run on 8 hits and struck out 7. Patrick Muldoon entered the game in the 7th to close out the contest.

Although the Gateway team was out hit by Mashpee, 12-9, a combination of aggressive base running, timely hits and near perfect defense kept the Gateway team in the game.

Gateway was lead offensively by Anthony Angelo, who went 2 for 4 in the contest, scoring twice and knocking in 2 of the Gateway runs.  Gateway got things going in the 2nd inning when Angelo lead off with a sharp single to right. Nick Aspden  drew a base on balls. On the next pitched, Gateway executed a double steal, leaving both in scoring position for Billy Sullivan. Sullivan then hit a hard ground ball to 1st, that scooted by the Mashpee first sacker, allowing Angelo and Aspden to score.

In the 4th inning, Billy Sullivan, Brian Ganshirt and Aidan Mcbride all singled. With bases loaded and 2 outs, Hunter Black singled to left, bringing home Sullivan and Ganshirt. Angelo then cleared the bases when he launched a triple to deep right-center field. Nick Aspden then legged out an infield hit, allowing Angelo to cross the plate thus capping off a 6 run inning. That was all the offensive Gateway would need as they went on to win 9-4.

Game #4. Gateway vs. Falmouth. The 15 year old Gateway All Stars’ hopes of advancing to the District 7 finals were thwarted last Thursday evening by a gutsy Falmouth team.

Gateway found themselves down early in the game, when the Falmouth bats came to life early, tapping Gateway starter Billy Sullivan for 6 runs on 8 hits in 2 1/3 innings. Gateway managed to get back into the game in the bottom of the 3rd when Ollie Hiller drew a walk, Mikey Sullivan reached on an error and Harry Irving singled to load the bases. Anthony Angelo then lined a two-out single to right scoring Hiller and Sullivan. Kurtis Garcia drove in Irving with a single to center, as Gateway pulled to within 3. Gateway again threatened in the 4th, when Mikey Mendes lead off with a walk, stole second and came around to score by a single from Mike Sullivan. With basses loaded and no outs, Harry Irving lined a shot up the middle, only to be snared by the Falmouth shortstop. Hunter Black was then called out on a questionable called third strike for the second out of the inning. Anthony Angelo then stepped up and lined a shot to the gap in right center , only to be tracked down by the Falmouth right fielder to end the inning. In the 6th inning, Aidan McBride reached on an E6 and stole second. Irving singled in McBride and Black was hit by a pitch. With 2 out, Angelo again drove a ball to deep left field, only to be tracked down be the speedy Falmouth left fielder. Gateway again threatened in the 7th, but could only push 1 run across the plate, and dropped the contest by a 10 – 7 score.

Offensively for the tournament, Gateway was lead by Ollie Hiller, Anthony Angelo and Harry Irving. Hiller batted .555, with 1 RBI, scored 4 times with an on-base percentage of .636. Angelo batted .400, with 5 RBI, scored 5 runs, hit 2 doubles and 1 triple, and had an on-base percentage of .533.  Harry Irving batted .500 with 4 RBI and scored twice. Kurtis Garcia, Mike Mendes and Brian Ganshirt all batted .333. Mike Mendes batted an even .300 and had an on base percentage of .533.

Gateway finished 2-2 in the District 7 Tournament and will see action again in the John B. Steele Memorial Tournament in Dartmouth that begins on July 31st.
